How Far Is Araku Valley from Vizag?

Araku Valley is in the Eastern Ghats, north-west of Visakhapatnam, about 115 km by road. The drive climbs through the Ananthagiri ghat section with coffee estates, hairpin bends and valley views. Plan on 3 to 4 hours each way, longer on weekends and holidays.

From Coral Hotel in Madhurawada, just off the NH16, you can head out early in the morning without crossing the city centre, which saves time at the start and end of a long day.

Getting to Araku: Train or Road?

By train

The Visakhapatnam–Araku tourist train runs daily from Visakhapatnam station, with vistadome coaches that have glass roofs and wide windows. The line climbs through many tunnels and bridges, and the views are the highlight of the trip. It leaves early in the morning and takes about 4 hours. Vistadome seats sell out fast, especially from October to January, so book on IRCTC as soon as your dates are fixed.

By road

A car or cab gives you the most freedom. You can stop at the coffee estates, viewpoints and Borra Caves in any order. Self-drivers should take the ghat road slowly and avoid driving it after dark. Coral can arrange car rental on request.

The best of both

Many visitors take the train up and a cab back. You get the scenic rail journey in the morning and can stop at Borra Caves and the viewpoints on the way down.

Top Places to Visit on an Araku Trip

Borra Caves

Stalactites inside Borra Caves on the road from Vizag to Araku Valley

Some of India’s largest and deepest limestone caves, carved by the Gosthani river over millions of years, with stalactites, stalagmites and a lit walkway. They sit on the road between Vizag and Araku. Allow 1 to 1½ hours, and wear shoes with grip.

Tribal Museum

A good introduction to the Eastern Ghats’ tribal communities, with displays of homes, tools, clothing and daily life.

Araku Coffee Museum

Opposite the Tribal Museum. Learn how coffee came to the valley, taste a fresh cup and pick up coffee, chocolates and souvenirs to take home.

Padmapuram Gardens

Landscaped gardens with flowering plants, tree-top huts and a small toy train. A relaxed stop, especially with children.

Galikonda Viewpoint and the Ananthagiri Coffee Estates

Galikonda is one of the highest hills in the Eastern Ghats. The viewpoint and the coffee estates on the ghat road are the best places for photos of the valley.

Chaparai Waterfalls

A stream that tumbles over wide, flat rocks about 15 km from Araku town. Best after the monsoon; the rocks can be slippery, so take care with children.

Best Time for an Araku Trip

•             October to February: cool, green and misty. The best time, but also the busiest

•             March to May: warmer, quieter and easier to book

•             June to September: lush waterfalls but heavy rain, landslide risk on the ghat road and slippery caves

Araku Travel Tips

•             Book train seats and cabs early for weekends, Dasara and Sankranti

•             Carry a light jacket from November to February; mornings can be cold

•             Mobile signal is patchy in the ghats, so download offline maps

•             Carry some cash for entry fees and small shops
